Salmon Fishing Etiquette and Club Rules
Etiquette and General Safety Tips for Salmon/Trout Anglers
- CLUB RULES ~ Please
abide by the rules set out by the club committee,
they have been implemented to assist all anglers
enjoy a days fishing and preserve the stocks
of the Atlantic Salmon. Failure to abide
by Club Rules will lead to the offender being
asked to leave the fishery.
- Permits have a catch allowance written on
the reverse, be aware of this and ensure you
abide by all allowances stated. Bag limits
must be adhered to without question at all times
and have been set by the Fisheries Board.
- Club members and guests must at all times
carry either a photographic ID card as
issued or a valid day ticket. No ID card or
permit, we operate a no fishing policy.
- A State Rod Licence is required and must
be carried on your person at all times and be
made available for inspection when requested.
- WATERKEEPERS ~
Please respect our waterkeepers, they are actively
protecting and maintaining club waters for the
benefits of both club members and visiting guests.
So please Help them to help you! If you see
anglers breaking club rules we urge you to report
it immediately to 058 54152 or inform one of
- HEATH & SAFETY
~ Do not engage in any activities that may be
detrimental to the health and safety of club
water users. Be safe and assist others also
- BEWARE OF OVERHEAD
ELECTRICAL CABLES, ELECTRIC WIRES AND CATTLE
FENCES ~ Carbon Rods are great conductors of electricity. Think
safe, stay alive
- BEWARE OF ERODED RIVER BANKS
~ They might collapse or fall in on you and be hazardous to your safety. If
you spot an area of club waters that needs addressing
please report it to our waterkeepers.
- RETURN ALL COLOURED
SALMON ~ They are getting ready to spawn, to breed the future Salmon
Stocks. ~ If you kill the breeding Fish, the species will die out! The Fisheries
board view the taking of coloured fish detrimental
to the future of salmon stocks and WILL fine
anglers without question. We actively encourage
all anglers to return coloured fish and those
found with coloured fish will be asked to stop
fishing and escorted off the river.
- RETURN ALL KELTS ~ It is
unlawful to kill a Kelt ~ They have already spawned and are making their way
back to sea. Anglers found with a kelt will find themselves addressing a magistrate!
- MOBILE PHONES ~
Do carry a mobile phone with you and do
in contact. Please remember to switch the phone
on to vibrate or low volume to avoid distracting
your fellow anglers.
- IF YOU HAVE SOMEONE WITH YOU WHO
IS NOT FISHING ~ Please ensure that your guests keep well away from the
bank and ask them to be quiet and not disturb the peace of other Anglers.
- BOUNDARIES ~ Please
respect the landowners rights, please keep to
pathways provided and avoid disturbing the landowners
- CAR PARKING ~ Please
use the car parking provided, do not become
a hazard or obstruct the right of way of other
road users, doing so is illegal!
- IN ALL SITUATIONS THE FLY
FISHERMAN HAS THE RIGHT OF WAY ! We have excellent fly waters and ask
anglers to follow pool etiquette at all times.
- CARRY YOUR FISHERIES BOARD
ROD LICENSE WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES ~ Fishery Board bailiffs make
regular visits to the river to check licenses and will fine an angler €130 for
failing to produce.
- MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE ON
THE CORRECT BEAT, THAT YOU KNOW THE UPPER AND LOWER BOUNDARIES AND THAT YOU
UNDERSTAND THE RULES OF THE FISHERY ~ Do not stray on to other beats.
If in doubt please ask.
- LEFT or RIGHT BANK ~ This
determines which bank you are fishing from. Look down river, if the bank that
you are on is on your Left side and the river is to your Right, then you are
fishing on THE LEFT BANK and vice versa.
- NEVER START FISHING IN
FRONT OF (i.e. DOWNSTREAM OF) ANY ANGLER WHO IS ALREADY ON THE WATER, EITHER ON
YOUR OWN OR THE OPPOSITE BANK. ~ Go to the top of the beat and fish down
behind the angler. This applies to ALL ANGLERS and implemented to ensure
quality fishing without causing problems.
- NEVER WADE PAST THE MIDDLE OF THE
RIVER ~ It is not your ground and deemed a very unsafe dangerous practice. Ideally you should not wade more than one third
of the way in. Cast further - rather than wade further. Remember your safety
is paramount, don't become a casualty.
- KEEP WELL AWAY FROM THE BANK OF
THE RIVER WHEN NOT FISHING ~ So that you will not disturb the Fish or any
Angler already on the river.
- NEVER 'HOG' A LIE ON THE
RIVER ~ Take two casts and then take a pace downstream. By doing
this, rods from both banks will be able to fish in harmony. When you have
reached the downstream limit of your beat, walk back to the top, keeping well
away from the bank and start again.
- DO NOT WEAR BRIGHT COLOURED
CLOTHING WHEN ON THE RIVER ~Stick to Green and Brown or nuetral colours
which blend in with the
surroundings and do not frighten the Fish !
- NEVER LEAVE RUBBISH OR DISCARDED
NYLON ON THE BANKS ~ Please Take it home with you or discard it
in the provided receptacles..
- IF GATES ARE OPEN WHEN YOU ARRIVE
LEAVE THEM OPEN ~ IF THEY ARE CLOSED KEEP THEM CLOSED UNLESS IT IS APPARENT
THE GATES HAVE BEEN LEFT OPEN IN ERROR! please
